Release date: June 13, 2014 Director: Mike Flanagan Film Info: a 2013 American supernatural psychological horror film written and directed by Mike Flanagan Synopsis: Tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of the children changed forever when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. In his 20's, Tim is released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life but Kaylie, still haunted by his actions, and is convinced her parents' deaths was caused by something supernatural through an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim's innocence, she tracks down the mirror, to learn similar deaths have befallen its owners. With the mirror back in their hands, they soon lose their hold on reality. Camera: There is a long shot panning to the right revealing an object under a sheet which creates an intellectual puzzle for the audience, the two person close up on who the audience presumes are the protagonists as they look scared, as well as multiple close ups of people with terrified looks on there faces. The close ups of the blood poring down the mirror is used to connote death as blood is an icon for the horror genre. Sound: A monologue with the voice of a young girl is used to set a cold mood as children are used to connote innocence and with the added echo effect it sets an even darker tone. The non-diegetic low tempo sound as it builds to the climax increasing the pace to build the tension. Editing: At the start of the trailer, the pacing is quite slow as it shows the equilibrium but then gets faster and faster which creating tension which makes the viewers intrigued to see what will happen next. The use of quick cuts towards the end of the trailer shows all the action of the film which adds excitement and curiosity to the trailer as Colour: Mostly dark colours are used such as dark red and black this is to connote the vulnerability of the characters and isolation they feel Mood and Styling: The use of a child's voice sets a very dark mood as i feel worried for the victims especial in the scenes the female victim is being chased by the monster. Narrative: The story is told non-linear through the use of a monologue at a fast pace with multiple quick shots Location: A loft only containing the mirror as well as what appears to be a haunted house.
Mise-en-scene
Lighting: The high key lighting used at the start of the trailer shinning down on the mirror frames it as an object of importance for the story. As well as the low key lighting used through out the rest of the trailer connoting the isolation and fear the protagonists feel. NVC: The NVC's are mainly framed in mid-shots and close-ups this is to show the look of fear on there face but also see what is happening in the rest of the scene like the antagonist chasing them. Setting: It is set in a house in the middle of the night in darkness to signify fear as many people have phobia of the dark and relate darkness with evil it connotes a fearful atmosphere. Costume: The costumes of the NVC's are just your normal every day clothes showing that this is set in modern times, and the antagonists don't wear any masks to hid there identities as they are supernatural beings. Props: The main prop being used is the mirror which connotes the protagonists insanity as it is because of it that they believe they are going mad over. The trailer is lacking phallic imagery but as it is a supernatural and not a slasher it is not required.
